The Wonderkids: Part 2
Marlos Moreno: Columbia’s new superstar and Manchester City’s new signing as his agent heads to England to finalise his move from Atletico Nacional for around £8M. At 19, Moreno has already accomplished a lot in his short time as a footballer, a full Colombian international and a recent Copa Libertadores winners medal. He is set to become the newest talent added to Pep’s squad as he attempts to reshape City ahead of his first season in England. So let’s examine why City have decided to sign this relatively unknown hidden gem.
Having played for his hometown team, Atletico Nacional, since the age of 14 Moreno established himself as a first-team regular last season and made 26 appearances scoring 5 times. His form last year caught the eye of some of the biggest clubs around Europe and Jose Peckerman, Colombia National Team manager. Peckerman saw enough potential in Moreno to give him 7 caps and include him in his Copa America squad in which Colombia went on to finish third.
The 5’7” winger is known for his turn of pace making him a nightmare for backtracking defenders and his ability to match anyone physically despite his diminutive size, a trait well suited to the Premier League. However, a trait that may not go down too well with his new Coach, Guardiola, may be his tendency to make the occasional selfish decision and go for glory instead of playing in a teammate but his decisions will become better under Guardiola with his possession based style of football.
Moreno will go out on loan to La Liga club Deportivo La Coruna to gain experience from European football.
But the attacker has performed on the international stage with Colombia, and if he can settle in Europe as well as having some success in inevitable loan spells over the next couple of seasons, he could become a real superstar under Guardiola’s guidance.
